After his wife died Dirk, heartbroken, forever leaving
home to Holland. Strickland came in narrator’s home and told him that as soon
as he got tired of writing naked Blanche (he used it as a free nudes), he left
her. Blanche could not return to her husband, as poisonous Strickland
said, unable to forgive his victims that he brought (Blanche was governess
seduced her son of the owner, and when it was discovered that she was pregnant,
her kicked out, she tried to kill herself, then something Stroeve and married
her.) When at last the narrator shows Strickland his paintings, they make it a
strong and strange impression. They feel incredible effort to express
something, the desire to get rid of the force, the owner of the artist - as if
he knew the soul of the universe and must put it into his paintings. When fate
throws the narrator to Tahiti, where Strickland spent the last years of his
life, he asks about the artist of all who knew him. He told how
Strickland, no money, no job, hungry, and he lived in a doss house in
Marseilles, as using false documents to escape the vengeance of a Shrew Bill
was employed on a ship going to Australia, as in Tahiti worked on a plantation
overseer. The inhabitants of the island, during the life of a vagabond who
thought it was not interested in his "pictures" very much regret that
once missed the opportunity to buy paintings for pennies, now facing a lot of
money. Old Tahitian, hostess hotel, home to the narrator, told him how she
found Strickland wife - a native Ata, his distant relative. Immediately
after the wedding Strickland and Ata went into the forest, where Ata was a
small piece of land, and the following three years were the happiest of the
artist's life. Ata did not bother him, did what he told me, grow up their
children.
